Guest bedroom design should be simple, flexible and easy to keep ready. In many Pakistani homes the mehman kamra hosts relatives for days at a time, so plan for more than one night: a wardrobe with some empty space, a mirror, a luggage spot and easy access to a washroom.

Planning the bedroom layout
Place the bed first, ideally on the wall facing the door but not directly in line with it. Leave enough walking space on both sides and at the foot, and keep wardrobe doors clear of the bed when they open.

- Plan two-way switches by the door and the bed
- Use blackout curtains or blinds on sun-facing windows
Ceilings, lighting and comfort
A false ceiling in gypsum or POP adds cove lights and hides wiring, but keep it light in a room with a low slab. Layered lighting, a soft ambient glow, bedside lamps and a brighter light for dressing, makes the room work at every hour.
