Home security in Lahore has moved well beyond a single camera at the gate. Homeowners now combine CCTV with video door phones, electric locks, motion sensors, smart lights and fire detection, often controlled from a phone. Businesses add access control and attendance. The equipment is widely available; the difference between a good and a poor system is in planning, cabling, power backup and setup.
This guide explains what security and smart home installers do, how to compare them and what to watch for.

Rules that apply in Lahore
For most private homes, security systems are a choice, not a legal requirement. That changes for some businesses and buildings:
- Vulnerable establishments. Punjab's security law for "vulnerable establishments" (places of worship, banks, schools, hospitals, hotels, petrol stations, jewellers and notified shops or arcades, among others) defines security arrangements to include CCTV cameras, biometric systems, walk-through gates and security alarms. Managers must make "appropriate and sufficient security arrangements" as advised by the district committee (Punjab Security of Vulnerable Establishments Ordinance 2015). Private homes are not in that list.
- Fire safety in commercial buildings. The LDA said in January 2026 it would not issue completion certificates to commercial buildings without a Civil Defence NOC, with joint inspections covering "fire exits, alarm systems, and firefighting equipment" (Bloom Pakistan).
If you run a business, ask the installer and your building consultant which rules apply to you.
How to choose an installer
- Ask for a site survey first. A good installer visits, checks camera angles, cable routes, internet and power before quoting.
- Get an itemised quote. Each camera, the recorder, hard drive size, cable type and length, power supply, UPS, mounting and labour should be listed.
- Ask about the electrician's work. Security systems need clean power and proper earthing. If the job includes electrical work, ask who does it and whether they are qualified.
- For fire alarms in commercial buildings, ask whether the design is done by, or checked by, an engineer familiar with the Building Code of Pakistan fire safety provisions, which the Pakistan Engineering Council lists among its codes (Minute Mirror).
- Check after-sales support. Ask who answers when a camera goes offline, and how quickly.
- Ask for references from similar jobs in Lahore.
How pricing usually works
We do not list prices because equipment and labour vary widely. Ask for two or three written quotes on the same scope.
- Per point: common for cameras, sensors and smart switches (equipment plus installation per point).
- Package: a set number of cameras or devices with a recorder and app setup.
- Lump sum: whole-house automation or a building fire alarm system to a design.
- Annual maintenance: a yearly fee for checks and support.
What moves the price:
- Number of cameras or devices and their resolution or features
- Wired vs wireless; length and type of cable; conduit work
- Recording storage (hard drive size and number of days kept)
- Power backup (UPS, inverter connection)
- Mounting height and difficulty, outdoor housings
- New build (easy cabling) vs finished house (surface conduit, chasing walls)
- Integration with gates, locks, lights and existing wiring
From request to completion
- Send your request with property type, size, floors and what you want covered.
- Site survey by shortlisted installers.
- Compare itemised quotes on the same scope.
- Agree a layout: camera positions, door phone points, sensor locations, recorder location.
- Cabling and installation, ideally before plaster and paint on a new build.
- Configuration: recording, motion alerts, app access, passwords, user accounts.
- Handover: a walkthrough, a printed list of devices and passwords, warranty papers.
- Follow-up check after a few weeks of use.
Red flags
- A quote with no brands, models or specifications stated (ask for model numbers in writing)
- Installers who keep the admin password and only give you a viewer login
- Default passwords left unchanged
- No power backup for the recorder and cameras
- Cameras pointing into neighbours' homes or private spaces
- Fire alarm "systems" that are only battery smoke detectors sold as a full system for a commercial building
- No warranty or after-sales contact
FAQs
Is CCTV compulsory for my house in Lahore? Not under the vulnerable establishments law, which covers specific types of premises, not private homes. Societies may have their own rules, so ask yours.
Should I plan security during construction? Yes. Conduits and cable routes are much cheaper and neater before plaster. Ask your electrician and installer to work from the same drawing.
Wired or wireless cameras? Wired systems are usually more reliable for permanent installs. Wireless suits small add-ons or rented homes. Your installer should explain the trade-off for your house.
Can I watch my cameras from abroad? Most modern systems support remote viewing on a phone, given a stable internet connection at the house.
Do I need a fire alarm at home? For most houses it is not a legal requirement, but smoke detection is a sensible safety step. Commercial buildings have stricter requirements.
What should I get at handover? Admin passwords, a device list with locations, warranty documents and the installer's support number.
