Rooftop solar has spread across Lahore homes, offices, factories and housing projects. Builders, installers and larger buyers purchase panels, inverters, batteries and structures in bulk. Rates move quickly with imports and exchange rates, so the most useful thing you can do is buy the right specification from a supplier who can prove it.
Products in this category
| Product | What it is | When you need it |
|---|---|---|
| Solar panels | Photovoltaic modules that convert sunlight to DC electricity, rated in watts | Every solar system |
| Inverters | Convert DC from panels (and batteries) to AC for the home or grid; on-grid, off-grid and hybrid types | Every system; type depends on grid and backup needs |
| Batteries | Store energy for night use or load shedding; lithium and lead-acid types | Off-grid and hybrid systems, or backup |
| Mounting structures | Frames that hold panels on roofs or the ground | Every installation |
| Balance of system | DC and AC cables, breakers, surge protection, earthing, connectors | Every installation, usually from the installer |
Grid connection rules in 2026
If you plan to export power to LESCO, the rules changed this year. NEPRA's Net Metering Regulations 2026 replaced the 2015 regulations and moved solar consumers to a net billing system: surplus power is bought at the prevailing national average energy price instead of the earlier fixed rate, with agreements for five years, renewable for another five (Aaj News, 9 February 2026). This changes the payback of a system and makes batteries and self-consumption more important. Check current terms with LESCO and NEPRA before sizing a grid-tied system.
How to choose a supplier
- Ask for import and conformity documents. Under SRO 604 of the Import Policy Order, imported solar PV equipment such as panels, inverters and charge controllers must come with a Type Test Certificate, a Certificate of Conformity and a Pre-Shipment Inspection Certificate from accredited bodies (Intertek). Ask suppliers for these for the model you are buying.
- Use certified installers. The Alternative Energy Development Board was merged into the Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB) in May 2023, and PPIB publishes certification regulations and lists of certified installers in categories C1, C2 and C3 (PPIB). Check the installer's name on the current list.
- Check datasheets against labels. Panel wattage, efficiency and dimensions should match the datasheet and the box.
- Get warranties in writing from the supplier, with clear terms on who handles claims.
- Compare like with like. Two quotes are only comparable on the same panel wattage, inverter type and capacity, battery chemistry and capacity, and structure specification.
How pricing usually works
Solar prices in Lahore change often, and there is no official price list, so get written quotes and check their validity date. Common bases:
- Panels: per watt, or per panel of a stated wattage
- Inverters: per unit, by capacity and type
- Batteries: per unit, by chemistry and capacity
- Structures: per kilowatt of panels, per panel or per ton of steel
- Complete systems: per kilowatt installed, from installers
What moves the price:
- Exchange rate and import costs
- Panel technology and wattage
- Inverter type (on-grid, hybrid, off-grid) and capacity
- Battery chemistry, capacity and cycle life
- Structure material, height and galvanising
- Order volume and payment terms
- Warranty support offered locally
Process from request to delivery
- Define the load. Monthly units, daytime and night use, and backup needs.
- Get a system design from a certified installer: kW of panels, inverter type and size, battery size.
- Request supplier quotes on that exact specification.
- Check documents and warranties for each model.
- Confirm the order in writing with model numbers, quantities, delivery date and price validity.
- Delivery and inspection at your site or warehouse.
- Installation and testing by the installer.
- Grid application with LESCO if exporting power.
Quality concerns to watch
A study by the Institute of Policy Studies of 40 net-metered systems in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Lahore found about 22% used panels failing quality parameters (hotspots, snail trails, delamination), about 15% had inadequate interconnection and about 10% had improper mounting structures (IPS, February 2022). The same study reported certified vendors selling their credentials and outsourcing installations.
Red flags
- No datasheet, model number or serial numbers
- Wattage on the panel label that differs from the quote
- "Grade A" claims with no documents
- Installer not on the PPIB certified list, or using someone else's certificate
- Warranties that exist only verbally
- Quotes far below others with no clear reason
FAQs
Is net metering still available in Lahore? NEPRA's 2026 regulations moved new arrangements to net billing at the national average energy price. Confirm the terms that apply to you with LESCO before signing.
Do I need batteries? For backup during outages and to use more of your own solar at night, yes. For daytime-only savings on a grid connection, an on-grid system without batteries may be enough.
How do I check an installer? Check their name on PPIB's certified installer list and ask for recent installations you can visit.
Should I buy panels and inverters separately from the installer? You can, especially in bulk, but agree with the installer first that they will warranty the installation with your equipment.
How long are quotes valid? Often only a short time, because prices change with imports. Ask for the validity date in writing.
Are imported panels checked by the government? SRO 604 requires certificates for imported solar equipment, but the IPS study found non-compliant panels still entered the market. Do your own checks.
