Steel Shed Design: Choosing the Frame
Most industrial sheds in Punjab use one of three frame types. Conventional portal frames built from standard rolled sections are easy to source and fabricate locally. Pre-engineered sheds use built-up tapered sections, deeper where bending is highest and slimmer elsewhere, which saves steel on wider spans. Truss roofs on steel or RCC columns can suit lighter roofs and older buildings being covered.
The right choice depends on span, eave height, whether you need a crane, how fast you want it erected and what your fabricator is comfortable with. A good engineer will explain the trade-offs rather than push one system.
Wind, Rain and Heat: What Lahore Sheds Must Handle
Light steel roofs are more at risk from wind uplift than from their own weight. Strong pre-monsoon storms can peel sheets and pull purlins if fixings, bracing and roof-to-frame connections are not designed for uplift. Open-sided sheds and canopies need particular care because wind can get underneath.
Heat and rain shape the roof too. Insulated sheets or under-deck insulation, ridge vents, wall louvres and translucent sheets for daylight make the working space far more comfortable. Gutters and downpipes must be sized for heavy monsoon bursts, with outlets led away from foundations.
- Roof bracing and wall bracing to keep the frame stable sideways
- Fixings and purlin spacing checked for uplift, not just downward load
- Ridge ventilation and insulation to reduce heat inside
- Adequate roof slope so water runs off quickly
Foundations and Floors Under a Shed
Shed columns push down, but they also try to slide sideways and, in storms, lift up. Isolated footings with properly embedded anchor bolts handle these forces, and the engineer sizes them from the soil test results. Getting anchor bolt positions exactly right before concrete is poured saves a great deal of trouble during erection.
The floor slab is usually separate from the frame foundations. Its thickness and reinforcement depend on forklift traffic, racking legs and machine bases, so tell your engineer what will run and stand on the floor.
