Steel Structure Factory Design
Most factories in and around Lahore use steel for the main production hall because it provides wide, column-free floors and fast construction. Steel factory design starts from the plant layout: machine rows, crane runways, aisle widths and loading doors decide where columns can stand and how high the frame must be.
Cranes add moving loads and require stiff columns, crane girders and careful tolerances. Mezzanines for offices or stores, roof-mounted equipment, solar panels and suspended services must all be included in the design from the start. Plan for expansion by designing end frames and foundations that allow more bays later.
- Column grid aligned with the production layout
- Crane runways and girders designed for moving loads
- Roof designed for solar panels, ducts and equipment you plan to add
- Gable ends ready for future extension
PEB Design vs Conventional Steel
PEB design, short for pre-engineered building, uses built-up tapered sections fabricated from steel plate. Material is placed where forces are highest, so steel weight can drop on wide spans, and parts arrive ready to bolt together. Conventional steel uses standard rolled sections that local fabricators handle easily and that suit irregular shapes, multi-storey frames and additions.
Neither is always better. The right choice depends on span, building shape, fabrication capacity, delivery time and how much customisation the building needs. Ask your engineer to explain the options for your project.
Stability, Connections and Protection
Steel frames must be stable in all directions. Bracing, rigid connections or concrete cores resist wind and earthquake forces, and missing bracing is one of the most common faults on unengineered sites. Connections are where many failures start, so welding quality, bolt grades and tightening must follow the drawings.
Corrosion and fire are the other enemies. A suitable paint or galvanising system protects steel from humidity and monsoon rain, and fire protection may be required for occupied buildings. Coordinate these with the architect and services engineers early.
