How big is an 8 marla plot really?
Marla size is not the same everywhere. An LDA marla is commonly taken as 225 square feet, which makes 8 marla about 1,800 square feet. A DHA marla is commonly 272.25 square feet, which makes 8 marla about 2,178 square feet. That difference is roughly the size of a large bedroom, so it matters for your naqsha.
Sizes differ by authority and society, and actual plots can vary slightly from the plan. Always check your allotment letter and have the plot measured on site before design. Your designer should work from these real dimensions, not from a standard template.
A typical room mix for an 8 marla house
Most families on 8 marla plots aim for a double-storey house. Common wish lists include a drawing room near the entrance, a family lounge with dining, a kitchen, and bedrooms with attached washrooms spread over both floors. A small lawn or courtyard, a car porch and a servant room or store on the roof are also frequent requests.
Rather than adding as many rooms as possible, decide which spaces your family actually uses daily. A slightly larger lounge and kitchen often improve life more than an extra small bedroom.
- Drawing room with guest washroom near the gate
- Open or semi-open kitchen beside the family lounge
- Bedrooms with attached washrooms on both floors
- Car porch planned for your actual vehicles
- Roof space for a store, laundry or servant room
Splitting ground and first floor on an 8 marla naqsha
A common approach is to keep guest and family living spaces on the ground floor with one bedroom for elders, and place most bedrooms upstairs with a small upper lounge. If the upper floor may become a separate portion, the stair should reach it without entering the ground floor family area, and a kitchen space should be planned upstairs.
Discuss with your designer how front and rear setbacks shape the footprint. Covered area and setback limits are set by your approving authority, so confirm them before you settle on room sizes.
