Lawn and garden design for Lahore's climate
A healthy lawn in Lahore needs the right grass, good soil preparation and a slight slope so rainwater drains away from the house. In shaded areas under large trees, ground covers or paved sitting areas often work better than grass.
Shade trees on the south and west of the house can reduce heat reaching walls and windows. Native and climate-hardy plants need less water and recover faster after extreme heat. Grouping plants by water need keeps irrigation simple and avoids wasting water.
- Keep large trees well away from foundations and boundary walls
- Use permeable paving where possible so rain soaks in
- Place taps and irrigation points before paving is laid
- Plan a covered sitting area for summer evenings
Farmhouse landscaping
Farmhouse landscaping is about scale. The designer zones the land into entrance drive, lawns for events, orchard or kitchen garden, play areas and service zones. Water supply, a tubewell or storage tank, and drainage of large lawns need early planning. Pathway and boundary lighting, ideally with solar-powered or backed-up circuits, keeps the grounds safe during power cuts.
Rooftop Garden Design
A rooftop garden can make a hot Lahore roof usable on summer evenings and help keep the floor below cooler. But a roof is not a lawn. Soil, water and planters add a lot of weight, so a structural engineer should confirm what the slab can carry before anything is placed on it.
Waterproofing is the next priority. The roof needs a sound waterproofing layer, a root barrier and clear drainage paths so water never sits on the slab. Lightweight growing media, raised planters and container trees keep weight down. Rooftop gardens also have to share space with water tanks, AC outdoor units and, more and more often, solar panels. A designer can plan the roof in zones so panels get full sun while seating and plants sit in the remaining area.
- Get the slab's load capacity checked by a structural engineer
- Repair or renew waterproofing before planting
- Use drip irrigation to avoid overwatering and leaks
- Choose wind-tolerant, heat-tolerant plants for exposed roofs
- Keep safe access and parapet height for children
