How to choose a supplier
There is no single licence that marks a good timber or door supplier. Check practical things instead:
- Business details. Ask for a written quote and invoice on letterhead with the supplier's address and NTN. For larger orders, ask for a sales tax invoice and check the supplier's registration with FBR.
- Showroom or workshop visit. See finished doors and stocked boards. Look at joints, edges and finish.
- Wood type in writing. The quote should name the timber species or board type, thickness and core.
- Moisture and seasoning. Ask how timber was dried and how long it has been stored. Green timber shrinks and warps after fitting.
- Termite treatment. Ask whether wood and frames are treated, and with what.
- Sample door. For bulk orders, approve one sample door before full production.
- Delivery and fitting. Confirm whether fitting, hardware and polish are included.

The process from request to delivery
- Make a door and cabinet schedule with your architect: each door's size, location, type, finish and hardware.
- Send the schedule with your request so suppliers quote on the same basis.
- Compare quotes line by line, not on the total.
- Approve a sample for bulk orders.
- Confirm the order in writing with delivery dates and payment stages.
- Frames first. Frames are often fixed before plaster; doors are hung after plaster and flooring.
- Delivery check against the schedule.
- Fitting, hardware and polish, then a final walk-through to check swing, gaps and locks.
Storage and site care
Wood and boards are damaged more often on site than in the showroom. A few habits prevent most problems:
- Bring doors and boards to site only after plaster and wet works are mostly done.
- Store them flat on battens, off the floor, in a dry, covered room away from fresh plaster.
- Keep them out of direct sun, which can dry one face faster than the other and cause bowing.
- Seal or prime all edges of doors and boards before fitting, including top and bottom edges of doors.
- Keep hardware boxed and labelled by door number until the final fitting.
Red flags
- A quote that says "wood door" without naming the timber or core.
- Very low prices for "solid wood" doors that feel light.
- Fresh-smelling, damp or heavy timber, which may be unseasoned.
- No sample allowed for a bulk order.
- Full payment demanded before production.
- Hardware listed only as "locks and hinges" with no type.
FAQs
Which is better for internal doors, solid wood or MDF? Solid wood is strong and long-lasting but costs more and can move with moisture. MDF and laminated doors are more stable and economical for internal use. Many owners use solid wood for the main door and MDF or laminated doors inside.
Should I use plywood or MDF for kitchen cabinets? Plywood is generally preferred for carcasses near sinks because it handles moisture better. MDF is often used for shutters with paint or lacquer finishes. Ask your carpenter or kitchen maker about the grade.
How do I protect doors from termites? Ask for treated timber and frames, avoid wood in contact with damp walls and floors, and ask your contractor about anti-termite treatment of the building.
When should door frames be fixed? Usually before plaster, so they sit firmly in the wall. Doors are hung later to avoid damage.
