House wiring is one of the few jobs in a build you cannot easily redo. Once the conduit is in the wall and the plaster is on, mistakes become expensive. Getting the plan, materials and testing right the first time is the whole point of hiring a proper electrical contractor.

What's included

Item What it covers
Point plan Number and position of switches, sockets, light, fan, AC, geyser and motor points per room
Conduit work PVC conduit and boxes in walls and slabs, laid before plaster
Cabling Pulling wires through conduit for each circuit, sized to the load
Distribution board Main breaker, circuit breakers, and ideally RCD protection
Separate circuits Lights, power sockets, each AC, kitchen, geyser/motor
Earthing Earth wire to every power point and the DB, connected to an earth pit
Fittings Switch plates, sockets, holders (at finishing stage)
Testing & handover Insulation and earth checks, labelled DB, test report

Rewiring an older house covers the same items, plus removing old wiring and repairing chased walls.

When you need it

  • New construction — conduit at gray structure, wiring at finishing.
  • Adding a floor or annexe — new circuits and often a load extension.
  • Old or damaged wiring — brittle insulation, aluminium wiring, frequent faults, burning smell at sockets.
  • Major renovation — kitchen and bathroom remodels, adding ACs.
  • Before applying for a new meter — LESCO needs the wiring complete. NEPRA's Consumer Service Manual requires a test report from the Electric Inspector or an authorised wiring contractor before energisation (NEPRA CSM, clause 2.7.2).

Step-by-step process

  1. Share your drawings. Give the contractor your approved architectural plan and an appliance list (number of ACs, geysers, water motor, UPS).
  2. Agree the point plan. Walk through each room and mark points on the drawing. Decide on AC positions now, not later.
  3. Load estimate. The contractor estimates total load to size cables, the main breaker and your LESCO sanctioned load.
  4. Written quote. Points, wire and conduit type, DB and breakers, earthing, labour, and who supplies material.
  5. Conduit stage. Conduit and boxes go into slab and walls during gray structure. Check them before plaster — take photos of every wall.
  6. Wiring stage. Wires are pulled after plaster, colour-coded by phase, neutral and earth.
  7. DB and earthing. The DB is installed, circuits are labelled, and the earth pit is connected.
  8. Fittings. Switches, sockets and fixtures go in at the end of finishing.
  9. Testing. Insulation resistance and earth continuity checks, then the test report for LESCO.
  10. Handover. A marked-up drawing showing which breaker feeds what.

Approvals and documents in Lahore

For a new connection, LESCO's application usually asks for ownership documents, your CNIC, building plan approval or NOC, a site plan showing the meter location, and confirmation that the wiring has been completed by a licensed electrician (Daily Capital, LESCO new connection). Your contractor's test report is part of that pack. For load and meter paperwork in detail, see our load extension guide.

What affects the cost

  • Labour-only vs labour + material. Material is a large share of the total.
  • Number of points and circuits. Each AC circuit and each separate room circuit adds cable and breakers.
  • Covered area and floors. Longer cable runs on bigger houses.
  • Wire and breaker grade. Copper quality and wire gauge matter for safety and price.
  • Single-phase or three-phase. Three-phase houses need more cable and a larger DB.
  • New build vs rewiring. Rewiring a finished house means chasing walls and repairing plaster and paint.
  • Extras. Data/TV/CCTV conduit, outdoor lighting, gate and motor wiring, UPS circuits.

Contractors price per point, per square foot of covered area, or as a lump sum. Ask each one to quote the same point plan so you can compare fairly.

Questions to ask the contractor

  1. Is the quote labour-only or labour + material? Which items are excluded?
  2. What wire gauges will you use for lights, sockets and AC circuits?
  3. How many circuits and breakers will the DB have? Will you include RCD protection?
  4. Will every power point be earthed? Where will the earth pit go?
  5. Will you provide the LESCO test report as an authorised wiring contractor?
  6. Who supervises the site day to day?
  7. How do you handle changes after the conduit stage?
  8. What is the payment schedule, and what is your warranty on workmanship?

Red flags

  • No point plan or drawing, just a total price.
  • Wires joined inside walls without junction boxes.
  • Same colour wire used for phase, neutral and earth.
  • AC circuits shared with lights or sockets.
  • No earthing, or earth wire run only to a few points.
  • Pushing to use thinner wire "because it works the same".
  • Wants full payment before the wiring stage.

FAQs

Ghar ki wiring kab karwani chahiye? Conduit goes in at gray-structure stage, before plaster. Wires are pulled and fittings installed during finishing. Planning the points before the slab is cast saves cutting later.

Concealed or surface wiring — which is better? Concealed wiring in conduit is standard for new houses. Surface conduit or trunking is used for quick additions in finished rooms where cutting walls is not practical.

How long does house wiring take? It depends on house size, number of points and how ready the site is. Ask each contractor for a timeline tied to your construction stages.

Can I keep old wiring and just add new circuits? Sometimes. Have the old wiring tested first. If insulation is brittle or there is no earth, adding new load to it is unsafe.

Do I need a test report even for rewiring? If LESCO is energising a new or reconnected supply, a test report is required. NEPRA's manual also requires a fresh test report for reconnection (NEPRA CSM, clause 8.3.3).
