If you get a tingle from the washing machine, the geyser tap or a metal fridge door, your earthing is missing or has failed. Earthing gives fault current a safe path to the ground, so the breaker or RCD trips instead of the current going through a person. Many older houses in Lahore were wired with no earth at all, or with an earth wire that ends in a water pipe.

What's included

Item What it covers
Site survey Checks existing earth (if any), soil and space for a pit
Earth pit Excavation, electrode, backfill material and a pit cover for inspection
Earth conductor Main earth cable from the pit to the DB earth bar
Distribution to points Earth wire to every power socket, AC, geyser, motor and metal appliance point
Bonding Connecting metal water/gas pipes and frames where appropriate
UPS / solar earthing Earth for inverters, panel frames and battery racks
Testing Earth resistance and continuity tests, with results written down

When you need it

  • New construction, at gray-structure or finishing stage.
  • Shocks or tingling from appliances, taps or metal frames.
  • Installing a UPS, inverter, solar system or sensitive equipment.
  • Adding an RCD — it needs a working earth to protect properly.
  • Old wiring with no third (earth) wire.
  • After plot work damages the old pit.

Step-by-step process

  1. Survey. Check whether any earth exists and where the DB and points are.
  2. Choose a pit location with access for inspection and space away from foundations and septic tanks.
  3. Agree the design. Electrode type, pit depth and backfill are decided by the contractor based on site and soil; for commercial buildings this should be specified by a qualified electrical engineer.
  4. Excavate and install the electrode and backfill.
  5. Run the main earth conductor to the DB earth bar.
  6. Connect every point. Each socket and appliance point gets an earth wire back to the DB.
  7. Test. Measure earth resistance with a proper earth tester and check continuity at points.
  8. Record results and agree when to recheck — soil dries out in Lahore summers, which can change readings.

Approvals and documents in Lahore

Earthing is internal work and normally needs no LESCO permission. It does form part of the wiring that is tested before LESCO energises a new or reconnected supply — NEPRA's Consumer Service Manual requires a test report from the Electric Inspector or an authorised wiring contractor before energisation (NEPRA CSM, clause 2.7.2). If you live in a society, check whether digging in the lawn or setback area needs the society's permission.

What affects the cost

  • Number of pits. Some houses use one; larger buildings, UPS/solar systems or separate floors may use more.
  • Electrode and backfill material. Copper vs other electrodes, and the type of fill.
  • Depth and digging conditions. Hard soil, limited space or finished floors make excavation harder.
  • Earth conductor size and length from the pit to the DB.
  • Retrofitting earth wires to every point in a finished house — often the largest part of the job.
  • Testing and documentation.

Ask for a lump-sum quote per pit plus a separate price for running earth to points.

Questions to ask the contractor

  1. How many pits do I need, and why?
  2. What electrode and backfill will you use?
  3. Will every socket and appliance point be connected to earth?
  4. Which earth tester will you use, and will you give me the readings in writing?
  5. Will you connect the UPS/inverter and solar frames to earth?
  6. When should I recheck the earth?

Red flags

  • "Earth to the water pipe is enough."
  • No earth tester — just a test lamp.
  • Connecting earth to neutral at the socket to "make it work".
  • Pit sealed under tiles with no inspection cover.
  • Earth wire run to the DB but not to the points.

FAQs

Earthing karwana zaroori hai? Yes. Without earth, a fault in a metal appliance can make its body live, and breakers may not trip. RCDs also depend on a working earth.

How often should earthing be tested? Ask your contractor to recheck after installation and periodically, especially after a dry summer or any digging near the pit.

Do UPS and solar systems need separate earthing? They need proper earthing. Whether that is a separate pit or the main one depends on the system design; ask the installer to specify it.

Can I add earthing to an old house without rewiring? Yes, you can add a pit and run earth wires to key points through surface conduit. Full protection needs earth at every power point.
