Many Lahore plots sit below the road, especially where roads have been raised over the years or in newly developed schemes. Earth filling (mitti bharai) lifts the ground so rainwater drains away from the house and the plinth sits at the right height. It sounds simple, but poorly chosen or uncompacted fill can settle under floors and boundary walls for years.

Types and specifications

Type Description Typical use
Ordinary earth (mitti) Excavated soil from other sites or borrow pits Raising plot levels, lawns
Sandy soil Soil with a higher sand content Filling where better drainage and compaction are wanted
Sand fill Fine sand used as fill Under floors, around foundations, per engineer
Topsoil Soil suitable for planting Lawns and gardens, top layer only
Rubble fill Broken brick and concrete Only where the engineer allows; not under floors without approval

Your engineer or contractor should specify which fill goes where. Fill under floors and foundations usually needs more care than fill for a lawn.

What it is used for

  • Raising a low plot to road level or above
  • Filling inside the plinth before floors are laid
  • Backfilling around foundations
  • Lawns, gardens and landscaping

Quality checks on delivery

  1. Contamination: reject loads with rubbish, plastic, construction waste, roots or animal waste.
  2. Clay lumps: large hard clods are difficult to compact. Ask the supplier for broken-down soil.
  3. Organic matter: dark, smelly or root-heavy soil settles as it decays; keep it out of structural fill.
  4. Moisture: very wet soil is hard to compact; very dry soil needs watering.
  5. Measure the load before unloading.

How much you need

Start with a level survey. It records your plot level against the road and neighbouring plinths, so the architect can set the target level. Then:

Volume (cft) = area to fill (sq ft) × average depth (ft)

For example, filling a 2,250 sq ft area (a 10 marla plot on a 225 sq ft marla) by an average of 2 ft needs 4,500 cft of loose soil before compaction. Compacted soil takes up less space than loose soil, so you will need more delivered than this figure. Ask your contractor or engineer how much to add for your soil and method.

Filling and compaction

  1. Clear the plot of rubbish and vegetation.
  2. Spread fill in thin layers, not one deep dump.
  3. Water each layer to the right moisture.
  4. Compact each layer with a roller or plate compactor.
  5. Check levels against the survey benchmark as you go.

Your engineer should set the layer thickness and compaction method, especially under floors.

Bulk-buying tips

  • Delivery: confirm vehicle size and route; heavy trucks may damage society roads, and some societies limit them.
  • Unloading: tip directly where needed to save double handling.
  • Invoices: get a slip per load with date and quantity.
  • Payment: pay per measured load or per agreed trolley size, not a big advance.
  • Permissions: check society rules on heavy vehicles, stacking material and machinery. In DHA Lahore, a mechanical excavator needs permission (12 working days, Rs25,000 refundable security), and stacking material needs approval (8 working days, free) (DHA Lahore Building Control).

What affects the price

We do not have a sourced Lahore rate for earth filling. Get written quotes per cft or per trolley. Factors include:

  • Type of fill (ordinary earth, sandy soil, sand, topsoil)
  • Source and haul distance
  • Vehicle size and street access
  • Whether spreading and compaction are included
  • Season (monsoon can affect supply and access)
  • Total volume

FAQs

How much filling does my plot need? Get a level survey first. The surveyor can work out the volume to reach your architect's target level.

Can I fill with construction waste? Not under floors or foundations without your engineer's approval. It can leave voids that settle later.

Should filling be done before or after the boundary wall? Discuss with your contractor. The boundary wall and foundations must be designed for the soil they will hold back.

Why did my floor crack after filling? Often because the fill was not compacted in layers. Compaction is as important as the soil itself.
