Crush, called bajri on most Lahore sites, is the coarse aggregate in concrete. With cement, sand and water it forms the foundations, columns, beams and roof slab of your house. Good crush is hard, clean and of the size your engineer specifies. Dusty, flaky or mixed crush makes weaker concrete, however good the cement.

Types and specifications

Type Description Typical use
Single-size crush Crushed stone screened to one nominal size Structural concrete, as specified by the engineer
Smaller-size crush Finer crushed stone Thin sections, toppings, some precast work
Mixed / graded crush A blend of sizes Concrete where the mix design calls for it; sub-bases
Stone dust / screenings Fine by-product of crushing Bedding and some blocks; not a substitute for sand unless specified
Brick ballast Broken brick, not stone Soling and sub-base under floors, per engineer

Crush is usually ordered by nominal size (often stated in inches on Lahore sites). Use the size on your structural drawings or the engineer's mix design. If none is stated, ask before ordering.

What it is used for

  • Reinforced concrete: footings, columns, beams, slabs, stairs
  • Plain concrete: blinding under foundations, floor bases
  • Paving and driveway bases, as specified
  • Precast items such as kerbs and blocks

Quality checks on delivery

  1. Size: pick up a handful. Most pieces should be close to the size you ordered.
  2. Shape: angular, cube-like pieces are better than flat, flaky or elongated ones.
  3. Dust and clay: excessive dust coats the stone and weakens the bond with cement. Clay lumps should not be present.
  4. Hardness: pieces should not crumble when struck together.
  5. Contamination: no soil, roots, plastic or brick mixed in.
  6. Measure the load in cft before unloading.

If you have doubts on a large order, ask your engineer about a lab test for grading and strength.

How much you need

Concrete quantities come from the structural drawings. Your contractor should give crush quantities in cft from the mix design. We do not quote a per-sq-ft rule here, as it depends on slab thickness, foundation design and mix.

Measuring a load: multiply the inside length and width of the trolley or truck by the average height of crush, all in feet. Check several points if the load is heaped.

Bulk-buying tips

  • Order before each pour, with some margin, so a pour is not stopped halfway.
  • Delivery: confirm vehicle size and street access, and when it will arrive.
  • Unloading: on a hard, clean surface. Keep crush separate from sand and soil.
  • Washing: dusty crush is often washed on site before use; ask your contractor.
  • Invoices: a slip per load with date, size, cft and rate.
  • Payment: pay per measured load.
  • Storage: keep heaps away from drains and traffic; avoid mud splashing onto the stock.

What affects the price

Houseplot construction rate data puts crush in Lahore at about Rs105 per cft (July 2026; data compiled 18 October 2026). Quotes vary with:

  • Quarry source and distance to Lahore
  • Size and screening
  • Fuel prices and haul distance
  • Vehicle size and site access
  • Order size
  • Delivery and unloading terms

Compare written quotes on the same size and unit.

Common mistakes on site

  • Ordering crush before the size is confirmed on the drawings
  • Dumping crush on bare mud, where the bottom layer gets mixed with soil
  • Using the dustiest part of the heap for the slab pour
  • Running out mid-pour and topping up with whatever is available nearby
  • Letting the mixer operator change the mix without the engineer's say-so

FAQs

Which size of crush do I need? The one your structural engineer specifies. Different elements can use different sizes.

Why is dusty crush a problem? Dust coats the stone and reduces the bond with cement paste, which can weaken concrete. Wash or reject very dusty loads, as your engineer advises.

Can I use brick ballast instead of crush? For soling and sub-bases, often yes. For structural concrete, use the stone aggregate your engineer specifies.

Is crush sold by weight? In Lahore it is usually sold by volume (cft) or by the trolley or truck. Ask which basis is quoted.
