Hollow-sounding tiles, tiles lifting in summer heat and black grout lines in bathrooms are common complaints. With today's large vitrified and porcelain tiles, traditional sand-cement mortar does not always hold well. Tile adhesive (often called tile bond) and good grout solve much of this, if you match them to the tile and the location.

Types and specifications

Product What it is Best for
Standard cement-based adhesive Powder mixed with water Ceramic wall and floor tiles in dry areas
Improved / polymer-modified adhesive Cement-based with added polymers for stronger, more flexible bond Vitrified, porcelain and large-format tiles; external areas
Ready-mix paste adhesive Pre-mixed in buckets Small wall tiles, mosaics, indoor dry areas
Cement-based grout Powder mixed with water, sanded or unsanded General joints; choose by joint width
Polymer-modified grout Cement grout with additives for lower water absorption Kitchens, bathrooms
Epoxy grout Two- or three-part resin grout Wet areas, kitchens, pools, stain-prone joints
White cement Traditional grouting option Budget grouting, often with pigment

Check the data sheet for which tiles and surfaces each product suits, open time and coverage. Tile adhesives and grouts are not on PSQCA's compulsory certification list (PSQCA).

What each is used for

  • Large floor tiles: polymer-modified adhesive with full coverage under the tile.
  • Bathroom walls: suitable adhesive over a waterproofed surface, with a water-resistant grout.
  • Kitchen backsplash and counters: epoxy or polymer grout resists stains.
  • Tile-on-tile renovation: adhesive specified for this use, after cleaning and priming.
  • External cladding and stone: high-performance adhesive and mechanical fixing where your architect specifies.

Quality checks on delivery

  1. Product and type match the quote.
  2. Batch number and manufacturing date on each bag or bucket.
  3. Shelf life – reject expired stock.
  4. Bags dry and intact, no lumps.
  5. Grout colour – check shade code and buy one batch per area.
  6. Epoxy kits complete – all parts present.
  7. Invoice lists product, quantity and batch.

How much you need

Adhesive quantity depends on tile size, trowel notch size and the surface. Grout depends on tile size, joint width and depth. Use the coverage figures on the product's data sheet and add a margin for wastage. Ask your tiling contractor for written quantities based on your actual tile and area.

Bulk-buying tips

  • Order adhesive and grout with the tiles so the right products arrive on time.
  • Same batch for grout colour across a room.
  • Storage: dry, raised off the floor, shaded; keep epoxy away from heat.
  • Delivery: check bags before signing; torn or damp bags should go back.
  • Invoices and data sheets: keep them for warranty and repeat orders.
  • Payment: pay against delivered quantities.
  • Leftovers: buy a few spare bags of grout for future repairs, and note the colour code.

What affects the price

  • Adhesive class (standard versus polymer-modified)
  • Grout type: cement, polymer or epoxy

FAQs

Is tile adhesive better than cement mortar? For large, low-porosity tiles like vitrified and porcelain, adhesive generally gives a more reliable bond. For small ceramic tiles, mortar is still used widely.

Why does grout turn black in bathrooms? Water absorption, dirt and mould. Polymer or epoxy grouts and good ventilation help.

Can I use white cement as grout? Yes, it is a common low-cost option, but it absorbs more water and stains more than specialised grouts.

How soon can I walk on tiles? Follow the adhesive's data sheet; setting times vary by product and weather.

Do I need a different adhesive for outdoor tiles? Usually yes. Outdoor tiles face heat, rain and movement, so use an adhesive rated for external use.
