Plastic (polyethylene) tanks are the most common overhead tanks on Lahore homes. They are light enough to lift onto a roof, quick to install and need no welding or casting. Quality varies a lot, though: wall thickness, number of layers and the material itself decide how long the tank lasts in the summer sun and whether the water stays clean.
Types and specifications
| Type / spec | What it means | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Single-layer | One layer of polyethylene | Low-cost, often shaded or indoor locations |
| Multi-layer (2, 3 or more) | Inner food-grade layer, middle layers for strength and blocking light, outer UV-resistant layer | Rooftop tanks exposed to sun |
| Vertical cylindrical | Standard round tank | Most rooftops |
| Horizontal / loft | Lying tank for low spaces | Lofts, under stairs, low roofs |
| Square / slim | Space-saving shapes | Tight roofs, beside walls |
| Underground plastic tank | Thicker-walled tanks designed for burial | Where a concrete tank is not built |
| Capacity | Sold in gallons or litres | Matched to household use and supply timing |
The light-blocking middle layer matters because light inside a tank encourages algae. The inner layer should be food-grade. Ask the supplier to state both on the invoice.
What each is used for
- Homes: a multi-layer vertical tank on the roof, fed from an underground tank or the supply line.
- Apartments and plazas: several tanks connected, or larger capacities.
- Construction sites: temporary storage for curing and labour use.
- Housing projects: bulk orders of identical tanks for each unit.
Quality checks on delivery
- Check the label and invoice. Capacity, number of layers and batch or manufacturing date should match your order.
- Look inside. The inner surface should be smooth and evenly coloured; a dark middle layer should not show through as patchy.
- Press the walls. Walls should feel rigid, not thin and flexible.
- Smell it. A strong chemical smell can indicate poor material.
- Check for cracks, warping and dents, especially at the base and around the inlet and outlet.
- Check fittings and lid. Threads, lid fit and any included fittings.
- Count units on bulk orders and note any damaged pieces on the delivery receipt before signing.
How much you need
There is no fixed rule; capacity depends on the number of people, daily use and how long you must store water between supply times. Ask your plumber to calculate storage, and remember an overhead tank is often topped up from an underground tank by pump, so the two work together.
Bulk-buying tips
- Same specification across quotes. Compare capacity, layers and warranty, not just price.
- Delivery and unloading. Tanks are bulky but light; confirm vehicle access, unloading and whether lifting to the roof is included.
- Storage on site. Keep tanks shaded and upright, away from sharp objects and construction debris.
- Invoices. Itemised, with capacity, layers and quantity per item.
- Payment staging. For large orders, pay a deposit and the balance after delivery inspection.
- Warranty cards. Collect one per tank for project handover.
What affects the price
- Capacity — the biggest factor.
- Number of layers and wall thickness.
- Material grade — virgin food-grade polyethylene versus mixed material.
- Shape — special shapes can cost more.
- Fittings included.
- Delivery distance and roof lifting.
- Order quantity.

FAQs
Are plastic tanks safe for drinking water? They can be, if the inner layer is food-grade and the tank is kept clean and closed. Ask for the material specification in writing and test your water if you have doubts; PCRWR's labs, including one in Lahore, offer testing to the public (PCRWR).
How many layers should a rooftop tank have? Multi-layer tanks are designed for sun exposure, with a UV-resistant outside and a light-blocking middle. For an exposed roof, ask for a multi-layer tank.
Why is my plastic tank growing algae? Usually light getting in, through a thin wall or an open or broken lid. Clean it, fix the lid and consider a tank with a light-blocking layer.
How should the base be prepared? On a flat, level surface that supports the whole base, not on a few bricks. Ask the supplier for their base guidance.
Can I bury a normal plastic tank? Ordinary overhead tanks are not designed for soil pressure. Use a tank sold for underground use, or build a concrete tank.
