Grade 40 bars are lower-strength steel reinforcement compared with grade 60. They are still sold widely in Lahore and appear on some drawings for stirrups, ties, light slabs, boundary walls and other low-load work. The key rule: use grade 40 only where your engineer's drawings say grade 40.
Specifications
| Property | Grade 40 | For comparison: Grade 60 |

| Approx. rate, 18 Oct 2026 | Rs275,000 per ton (mill-gate) | Rs277,000 per ton (mill-gate) |

Sizes and weight per metre
Weight (kg/m) = D² ÷ 162, with D in mm.
| Size (mm) | Local name (approx.) | Weight per metre |
|---|---|---|
| 10 mm | 3 soot | 0.617 kg |
| 12 mm | 4 soot | 0.889 kg |
| 16 mm | 5 soot | 1.580 kg |
| 20 mm | 6 soot (19 mm) | 2.469 kg |
What it is used for
| Use | Notes |
|---|---|
| Stirrups and ties | Where the drawings specify grade 40 for links |
| Boundary walls and light structures | Low-load members, as designed |
| Lintels and small slabs | Only if specified |
| Non-structural work | Grills, frames, temporary works |
Because grade 40 has lower yield strength, a design using it needs more steel for the same load. That is why the two grades are not interchangeable without a redesign.
Quality checks on delivery
- Confirm the grade on bundle tags and the invoice. Grade 40 and grade 60 bars can look similar.
- Check bar markings against the grade ordered.
- Weighbridge slip for the truck.
- Spot-weigh a measured bar and compare with the table.
- Mill test certificate for the batch.
- Look at rust: light surface rust is common; flaking or pitting is not.
- Keep grades separate on site so grade 40 is not used by mistake in columns or beams designed for grade 60.
The steel industry's own association said in 2022 that 40–50% of Pakistan's market was substandard steel due to weak enforcement of PSQCA standards (Business Recorder; ProPakistani). Do not skip checks just because grade 40 is used for lighter work.
How much you need
Take quantities from the bar bending schedule. Total lengths by diameter, multiply by weight per metre and add the cutting allowance your engineer recommends.
Bulk-buying tips
- Order grade 40 and grade 60 as separate line items with separate tags.
- Ask for delivered, tax-inclusive prices per ton.
- Store off the ground, covered and clearly labelled by grade and size.
- Pay the balance only after weighing and checking.
- Keep invoices and certificates.
What affects the price
- Mill rates for the day.
- Diameter.
- Order size.
- Delivery and unloading.
- Cutting and bending.
- Taxes and invoicing.
Mixing grades on one site
Many houses use both grades, for example grade 60 main bars with links in a grade the engineer chooses. The risk is mix-ups. Paint bar ends a different colour for each grade when they arrive, keep separate stacks with labels, and tell the steel fixer which grade goes where before cutting starts.
FAQs
What is the grade 40 sariya rate in Lahore? On 18 Oct 2026, the approximate mill-gate rate was Rs275,000 per ton (Houseplot construction rate data). Delivered prices differ by supplier and quantity.
Can I use grade 40 instead of grade 60 to save money? No, not without your engineer redesigning. On the October 2026 data the price difference is small, and the strength difference is large.
What is the strength of grade 40 steel? Minimum yield strength of 40,000 psi (280 MPa) under ASTM A615.
How can I tell grade 40 from grade 60 on site? By bar markings, bundle tags and the mill test certificate. Keep them stacked apart.
