Almost every drainage line in a new Lahore house is UPVC or PVC: bathroom waste, kitchen drains, soil stacks, rainwater pipes and the main sewer connection. Pressure-rated PVC is also used for cold water supply. The two are not interchangeable, so buy the right type for each line.

Types and specifications

Type What it is Used for
UPVC pressure pipe Unplasticised PVC rated for internal pressure Cold water supply lines, main lines, tube well delivery
UPVC/PVC drainage (non-pressure) pipe Thinner-walled pipe for gravity flow Bathroom waste, kitchen drains, soil stacks, rainwater
Sewer pipe Larger diameter gravity pipe, often with rubber-ring joints House sewer to society or municipal line
Conduit pipe Light PVC for cable protection Electrical wiring, not plumbing
Fittings Bends, tees, Y-junctions, traps, cleanouts, reducers, sockets Joining and directing flow
Solvent cement Adhesive for solvent-welded joints Making joints on PVC pipes

Standard to check: PVC pressure pipes for cold potable water must meet PS 3051, which is on PSQCA's compulsory certification list (PSQCA SRO list). Look for the standard, size and pressure class printed on the pipe.

What each is used for

  • Drinking water: only pressure pipes made for potable water
  • Drainage and soil: non-pressure drainage pipes with proper slope
  • Rainwater: drainage pipe sized for your roof area
  • Sewer: larger pipes with cleanouts at bends and junctions
  • Never use electrical conduit for water

Quality checks on delivery

  1. Printing: standard, size, class or wall thickness, batch.
  2. Wall thickness: cut ends should look even; compare similar sizes across suppliers.
  3. Surface: smooth, no cracks, bubbles or brittleness.
  4. Straightness: pipes should not be warped.
  5. Sockets: clean, round, undamaged; rubber rings present where used.
  6. Fittings: match the pipe series and size.
  7. Solvent cement: sealed, within use date.
  8. Count: check every line of the invoice.

How much you need

There is no reliable per-square-foot rule. Quantities depend on the number and position of bathrooms, kitchens, roof drains and the route to the sewer. Ask your plumber or engineer for a take-off from the drainage drawing listing each pipe size, total length and each fitting. Add a cutting allowance and agree returns for leftovers.

Bulk-buying tips

  • Give the same list to every supplier so quotes compare like with like.
  • Confirm whether pressure pipes and drainage pipes are listed separately on the invoice.
  • Check vehicle access and arrange careful unloading; PVC can crack if dropped in cold weather.
  • Pay after checking, or stage payments if deliveries are split.
  • Storage: stack pipes flat on level ground or racks, support along the length, cover from sun, and do not pile heavy loads on top.
  • Keep solvent cement closed and away from heat.

What affects the price

  • Pressure pipe versus drainage pipe
  • Diameter and wall thickness or class
  • Certification and product line
  • Fittings mix, especially traps, cleanouts and Y-junctions
  • Order size and full bundles
  • Delivery distance
  • Market resin prices

Installation points that protect your pipes

  • Keep the slope on drainage lines that your plumber or engineer specifies, so waste does not settle.
  • Add cleanouts at bends and junctions on soil and sewer lines.
  • Support exposed pipes with clamps at regular intervals, and allow for expansion on long runs.
  • Use the solvent cement meant for the pipe, and let joints set before testing.
  • Pressure-test supply lines and water-test drainage lines before tiling or plastering over them.

FAQs

What is the difference between UPVC and PVC? UPVC is unplasticised, which makes it rigid. Most plumbing pipes sold as PVC in Pakistan are rigid UPVC. The bigger difference is pressure versus drainage rating.

Can I use drainage pipe for water supply? No. Drainage pipes are not rated for pressure. Use pressure pipes made for potable water.

Is PVC safe for drinking water? Pressure pipes certified to PS 3051 for cold potable water are made for that purpose.

Why do PVC pipes crack on site? Rough handling, dropping in cold weather, long sun exposure and over-tight fixing can all cause cracks.
