A railing is a safety item first and a design item second. It has to stop a child slipping through, hold an adult leaning on it, and survive years of sun and rain on a terrace. In Lahore, most railings are made by local fabricators in mild steel or stainless steel, with glass increasingly used for modern houses.
What's included
| Railing type | What it is | Best for | Upkeep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mild steel (MS) | Welded bars, pipes or flats, painted | Budget stairs, rooftops | Needs repainting |
| Stainless steel (SS) | Polished or brushed SS pipes and posts | Indoor and outdoor stairs, terraces | Low |
| Glass with SS fittings | Toughened glass panels in shoe channel or spider fittings | Modern interiors, terraces | Cleaning, fitting checks |
| Wrought-iron style | Decorative MS castings and scrolls | Classic houses | Repainting |
| Wooden handrail on steel balusters | Steel frame with wood top rail | Indoor stairs | Wood polish |
A full quote should also include the handrail, posts, fixing method (base plates, side fixing or embedded), end caps and finish.
When you need it
- During finishing stage of a new house, after stair and floor tiles are laid
- Replacing a rusted or unsafe old railing
- Adding a terrace or rooftop railing for safety
- Upgrading interiors with glass or stainless steel
Step-by-step process
- Pick the type and design – look at samples and finished work.
- Measure after flooring – railings fixed before tiling end up at the wrong height.
- Agree height and gaps – write them into the quote.
- Quote with specifications – pipe size and thickness, SS grade, glass thickness and type.
- Workshop fabrication – sections welded and prepared.
- Inspect – check welds, joints and polish before installation.
- Install – fix posts securely into the slab or stair side.
- Test – push firmly on the rail; it should not move.
- Final payment – after you are satisfied.
Rules to know
In DHA Lahore, a front sun or rain shade up to 2 feet wide is allowed, but it cannot be used as a balcony; railings or parapets up to 36 inches are permitted only on the front shade at ground and first floors. Balconies are not permitted on clear spaces, and commercial rooftops may not have fences, grills, louvers or railings (DHA Construction Regulations). Check your own scheme's rules before adding a balcony or terrace railing.
What affects the cost
Railings are commonly priced per running foot, sometimes per kg for heavy MS work. Factors:
- Material: MS, SS or glass
- Pipe or bar size and wall thickness
- SS grade and finish (polished or brushed)
- Glass type and thickness, and fitting system
- Design complexity and curves on spiral or curved stairs
- Fixing method and number of posts
- Finish for MS: primer and paint or powder coat
Questions to ask the fabricator
- What height and baluster gap will you build to?
- What pipe size and thickness, and which SS grade?
- Is the glass toughened, and what thickness?
- How will posts be fixed, and into what?
- Will welds on SS be ground and polished?
- Is installation included?
Red flags
- Gaps between bars wide enough for a child's head
- Horizontal bars that act like a ladder for children
- Posts fixed only into tiles or plaster
- Non-toughened glass in a railing
- "Stainless" railings that rust spots within months
- Welding on site near finished floors with no protection
FAQs
What is the right height for a railing? Agree a height with your architect based on where the railing is. Higher railings are safer on terraces and rooftops.
Is glass safe for a terrace? It can be, if the glass is toughened (or laminated), the right thickness and properly fixed. Ask for the specification in writing.
Why does my stainless steel railing rust? Lower-grade stainless, poor welding or iron contamination during fabrication can cause surface rust. Ask for the grade and polished welds.
Should the railing be fixed before or after tiling? Measure and fix after flooring, with care to protect tiles, so the height is correct.
