Hollow blocks are concrete blocks with open cavities running through them. They weigh less than solid blocks of the same size, use less material and can be reinforced by placing steel and concrete in the cavities where the design calls for it. In Lahore they are common for boundary walls, partitions, warehouses and commercial buildings.

Types and specifications

The AJ&K schedule of rates lists hollow block masonry in 4, 6, 8 and 12 inch (100, 150, 200 and 300 mm) thicknesses, using 1:3:6 or 1:2:4 cement concrete (AJ&K CSR block masonry items). Lahore makers offer similar thicknesses; confirm face size and strength in the quote.

Thickness Common use
4 inch Light internal partitions
6 inch Partitions, internal walls in framed buildings
8 inch External infill walls, boundary walls
12 inch Heavier walls and boundary walls where specified

The AJ&K General Technical Specifications (Chapter 9) call for blocks to be water cured for at least 10 days, for test certificates of crushing strength from an approved lab, and for block masonry to be kept wet for at least seven days (block masonry specification).

What each is used for

  • Partitions in framed buildings, where lighter walls reduce load on beams and slabs.
  • Boundary walls, often with reinforced cavities at intervals if your engineer designs it.
  • Warehouses and sheds, where speed matters.
  • Load-bearing walls only if your structural engineer designs the wall and approves the block strength.

Quality checks on delivery

  1. Webs and shells. The thin walls around the cavities should be intact and not cracked.
  2. Edges. Sharp, not crumbling.
  3. Size. Measure several blocks; inconsistent height makes uneven courses.
  4. Age. Ask when the batch was cast; avoid fresh, damp blocks.
  5. Surface hardness. Should not powder when scratched.
  6. Breakage count. Hollow blocks chip more easily; count and set aside damaged ones.
  7. Test results for any structural use.

How much you need

Count depends on block face size, wall area and openings. Hollow block walls may also need concrete or mortar fill in some cavities and reinforcement at set points if your engineer requires it. Ask your contractor for a quantity from the drawings, including fill and wastage.

Bulk-buying tips

  • Delivery. Ask for hand unloading; tipping cracks hollow blocks.
  • Stacking. Stack upright on level ground, not too high.
  • Cover. Protect from rain and mud.
  • Matching batches. Order the full quantity from one maker for consistent size.
  • Invoices. Block thickness, quantity and rate on each bill.
  • Payment staging. Pay per delivered load against signed notes.
  • Fixings. Plan in advance how doors, windows, shelves and AC brackets will be fixed into hollow walls; some points may need solid blocks or filled cavities.

What affects the price

Hollow blocks are usually priced per piece by thickness. We do not publish rates; get written quotes. Price depends on:

  • Thickness and face size
  • Mix and strength
  • Cement price (Houseplot construction rate data: Rs 1,500 to Rs 1,610 per 50 kg bag on 2026-10-18)
  • Machine-made versus hand-made
  • Transport distance and number of trips
  • Unloading
  • Order size

FAQs

Are hollow blocks good for a house? They are widely used for partitions and infill in framed houses. For load-bearing walls, follow your structural engineer's design.

Can I hang heavy items on hollow block walls? Use fixings suited to hollow walls, or plan solid blocks or filled cavities where heavy items will go.

Do hollow blocks keep a house cooler? The cavities can add some insulation, but overall comfort depends on wall thickness, plaster, roof insulation and shading. Ask your architect.

Do hollow block walls need plaster? For houses, usually yes. Fair-faced walls are used in some boundary and industrial work.

How do hollow block rates compare with bricks? Compare the full wall cost (blocks, mortar, labour, plaster) per square foot of wall, not the price per piece. Ask your contractor to price both.
