An interior designer turns an empty or tired space into something that works for the way you live or do business. In Lahore that covers everything from a single drawing room makeover in Model Town to a full fit-out of a new DHA house, a restaurant on MM Alam Road or an office floor in Gulberg.
This guide explains what interior designers actually do, the main types of work, how to choose one, how pricing is usually worked out and what to watch for before you pay anything.
What an interior designer does
Most Lahore interior designers work in one of two ways:
- Design only. They measure the space, prepare layouts, 3D views, material and colour schedules, and working drawings. You hire your own carpenters, painters and electricians, or the designer supervises them for an extra fee.
- Design and build (turnkey). The designer prepares the design and then delivers it through their own team or trusted sub-contractors: woodwork, false ceilings, lighting, paint, wallpaper, flooring touch-ups, furniture and soft furnishings.
Interior design is different from architecture. An architect designs the building and its structure. An interior designer works inside the structure. If walls need to be removed, openings widened or a floor added, you need an architect and a structural engineer, not only a decorator.

How to choose an interior designer
- Look at finished work, not only renders. 3D images are easy to produce. Ask for photos of completed projects and, if possible, a site you can visit or a past client you can call.
- Check what they are qualified to do. Interior design itself is not a licensed profession in the same way as architecture. If someone calls themselves an architect, though, they should be registered with the Pakistan Council of Architects and Town Planners (PCATP). The PCATP Ordinance makes it an offence to do professional architectural work without being on the Council's register, or to falsely imply registration (PCATP Hand Book). Ask for the registration number if they will touch structure or approvals.
- Confirm who will do the work. Ask whether carpentry, ceilings and electrical work are done in-house or sub-contracted, and who supervises on site each day.
- Ask for a written scope and drawings. A serious designer gives you a scope document, a drawing set and a material schedule before execution starts.
- Compare like with like. Two quotes are only comparable when they list the same rooms, materials, hardware and finishes.
How pricing usually works
There is no single published rate for interior design in Lahore, so get two or three written quotes. Designers usually price on one of these bases:
- Design fee per square foot of the area being designed.
- Lump-sum design fee for a defined scope, such as one kitchen or three bedrooms.
- Percentage of the execution cost, common when the designer also supervises.
- Itemised turnkey quote: woodwork per running foot or per unit, ceilings per square foot, paint per square foot, lighting per point, furniture per piece.
For context, finishing costs for new houses in Lahore are reported per square foot of covered area and vary widely between standard and premium specifications (Houseplot construction rate data, October 2026). Interior fit-out sits inside that finishing budget, so your choice of materials matters more than the designer's name.
Factors that move the price:
- Area and number of rooms
- Material grade (board type, laminate or veneer, solid wood, hardware quality)
- Ceiling and lighting complexity
- Custom furniture versus ready-made pieces
- Site condition (new grey structure versus an occupied house)
- Timeline: rushed jobs usually cost more
The process from request to handover
- Request and brief. You describe the space, rooms, style and budget range.
- Site visit and measurement. The designer measures and photographs the site.
- Concept. Mood boards, layouts and sometimes a first round of 3D views.
- Design development. Revisions, final 3D views and a material schedule.
- Quotation and agreement. A written quote with scope, payment stages and timeline.
- Working drawings. Detailed drawings for carpenters, ceiling teams and electricians.
- Execution. Woodwork, ceilings, electrical, paint, then furniture and soft furnishings.
- Snagging and handover. A walk-through to list defects, which are fixed before the final payment.
Red flags
- Asking for most of the money up front before drawings are approved
- No written scope, only a verbal "we will make it like the picture"
- Quotes that say "good quality board" or "imported hardware" with no specification
- Refusing to show completed work or give a past client contact
- Suggesting wall removal or new openings without an architect or engineer
- No mention of warranty on woodwork, hinges, channels or electrical work
FAQs
Do I need an interior designer or just a good carpenter? For one wardrobe or a simple shelf, a carpenter may be enough. For a whole house, kitchen or commercial space, a designer helps the rooms work together, avoids costly mistakes in layout and lighting, and gives you drawings that make quotes comparable.
Can an interior designer handle approvals? Interior work that stays inside the existing structure usually does not need building approval. Structural changes, shopfront changes in markets and additions to the building are different. Ask your society or the relevant authority, and involve a PCATP-registered architect where structure is affected.
How long does a home interior project take? It depends on scope, approvals of design rounds and how much is custom-made. Ask each designer for a written timeline broken into design and execution stages.
Should I buy materials myself? You can, but then you take on the risk of wrong quantities and mismatched batches. Many clients let the designer buy while asking for supplier invoices so prices stay transparent.
What should the payment schedule look like? A common pattern is a design fee first, then execution payments linked to stages such as material delivery, installation and handover. Keep the last payment until snags are fixed.
Is 3D visualisation included? Some designers include it in the design fee, others charge per view. Confirm how many views and revision rounds are included before you sign.
