featured_mode: card | illustrationJohar Town and Allama Iqbal Town cost about the same per marla for houses in Houseplot's Oct 2026 data, so the choice is about lifestyle: Johar Town for universities, hospitals and newer, wider blocks in a huge LDA scheme, Iqbal Town for older, central blocks, Multan Road and Orange Line access and big established markets.
Johar Town and Allama Iqbal Town are priced almost level for houses, so the choice comes down to how you live. Johar Town suits families who want universities, big hospitals and newer blocks in the LDA's largest scheme. Iqbal Town suits buyers who want an older, central neighbourhood with Multan Road, the Orange Line and Moon and Karim Block markets close by.

Location and commute
Johar Town is a union council in Iqbal Tehsil, named after Mohammad Ali Jouhar (Wikipedia). The LDA's head office is there (Dawn, 2015). It spreads across two phases with lettered blocks, so the commute differs a lot from one end to the other.
Allama Iqbal Town is older and more central. Its boundaries are Multan Road to the west and north and Wahdat Road to the south. The main boulevard runs from Scheme Mor on Multan Road towards Punjab University's New Campus (Wikipedia). Neighbours include Ichhra, Samanabad, Garden Town and Mustafa Town.
The big commuter difference is the train. The Orange Line runs along Multan Road with stations such as Sabzazar, Awan Road and Wahdat Road (Wikipedia). For Iqbal Town residents who work near the Mall, Anarkali or the Railway Station, that is a real advantage. None of the sources we opened places a rail line inside Johar Town.
Approval and legal status
Neither area is a private scheme waiting for LDA approval, so the usual approved-list check works differently here.
Johar Town is the LDA's own scheme, described by Dawn as its biggest, at over 26,000 kanals (Dawn, Jun 2024). The risk is not approval. It is the plot file:
- In March 2023 an inquiry found bogus files for about 100 residential plots, with no record of them at the LDA (Dawn). The plots ran from 5 marla to 1 kanal across blocks including L, J-1, Q, N, F-1 and R-II.
- An official said the LDA could reclaim such plots, even ones with buildings on them.
- In June 2024 digitisation helped the LDA trace about 3,200 of its own plots worth nearly Rs60 billion, and it retrieved 105 of them (Dawn).
- The Punjab government approved "regularization of pending plots in Johar Town" as part of a Master Plan 2050 meeting (Punjab Government).
Also watch the address. A November 2025 LDA list copy shows several private schemes in "M.A Johar Town" mouza, such as Campus View Town and Sunflower Housing Scheme (Pakistan Observer). These are not Johar Town blocks, even though the address reads "Johar Town".
Allama Iqbal Town was developed privately decades ago and is now a settled town. We found no recent title scandal there in the sources we opened. Your checks are the normal ones for an old area: registry, intiqal and a fard from the land record office.
Prices and value
Plots exist in both areas only at 10 marla in our data, and houses at all three sizes. The per-marla figures below are our arithmetic, using 20 marla to a kanal.
| Size | Johar Town, per marla | Iqbal Town, per marla |
|---|---|---|
| 10 marla plot | about 22.5–35 lac | about 25.5–35 lac |
| 5 marla house | about 46–69 lac | about 48–69 lac |
| 10 marla house | about 40–56 lac | about 39.5–55 lac |
| 1 kanal house | about 31.5–70 lac | about 31.5–75 lac |
The two are close enough that the gap is inside the normal spread between blocks. A 10 marla house runs about 4–5.5 crore in Johar Town and about 3.95–5.5 crore in Iqbal Town.
Johar Town also has 5 marla plots (about 1.2–2 crore) and 1 kanal plots (about 4–5 crore) in our data. We have no Iqbal Town figures for those sizes. Empty plots are rare in a built-out town.
Value, then, is about the house itself. In Iqbal Town you are more often buying an older structure. Budget for repairs or a rebuild and compare that against a newer Johar Town house.
Development and amenities
Johar Town has one of Lahore's densest clusters of education and healthcare. Wikipedia lists the University of Central Punjab, UMT and Bahria University's Lahore campus. It also lists Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital, Doctors Hospital and Mughal Eye Hospital, plus branches of Lahore Grammar School and Beaconhouse (Wikipedia).
Iqbal Town's strength is its markets. Moon Market at Dubai Chowk has a parking plaza. Karim Block Market on Wahdat Road is one of the city's busiest, known for garments (Wikipedia). Allama Iqbal Open University's Lahore campus is in Raza Block, and the town park opened in April 1982.
Both areas are fully developed. What differs is how old and wide the streets are, and how much commercial spillover a block gets.
Rental demand
Both areas have active rental markets in Houseplot's rent data (Oct 2026):
| Unit | Johar Town | Iqbal Town |
|---|---|---|
| 5 marla house | about Rs110,000–155,000 | not in data |
| 10 marla house | about Rs160,000–300,000 (thin sample) | about Rs112,000–200,000 |
| 1 kanal house | about Rs255,000–400,000 | about Rs275,000–300,000 (thin sample) |
| 1 kanal upper portion | about Rs110,000–175,000 | not in data |
| 10 marla upper / lower portion | not in data | about Rs55,000–95,000 / Rs66,000–100,000 |
| 1 bed flat | about Rs32,000–55,000 | not in data |
Johar Town's universities and hospitals bring students, doctors and young professionals, and the flat and portion market reflects that. Iqbal Town's portion rents show strong demand from families who share a house.
Resale and liquidity
Both are among south-west Lahore's most traded established areas, and both should resell faster than outer schemes.
In Johar Town, a buyer's main question will be file verification with the LDA. A house with a clean LDA transfer record sells easily. A plot with a disputed file may not sell at all.
In Iqbal Town, older houses often sell at land value. Corner and boulevard-facing plots near markets carry the high end of the range.
Red flags in each area
Johar Town
- A plot file you can't match to LDA records, especially in the blocks named in the 2023 inquiry.
- Addresses in "M.A Johar Town" mouza that are really separate private schemes.
- Residential houses used commercially without permission. Ask whether the house next door is a hostel or office, and check the LDA's position on it.
Allama Iqbal Town
- Gaps in the old ownership chain: missing intiqal, or inheritance not transferred.
- Older houses with structural problems, or additions without an approved map.
- Street-level commercial use near Moon Market or Karim Block that can affect quiet living.
Who should choose which
- Family with university students or doctors at Shaukat Khanum or Doctors Hospital: Johar Town.
- Commuter to the Mall, Anarkali or the old city: Iqbal Town, for the Orange Line.
- Buyer who wants a newer house or an empty plot to build on: Johar Town.
- Buyer who wants established markets on foot: Iqbal Town.
- Landlord targeting students and young professionals: Johar Town, where flats and portions have depth.
- Buyer worried about file fraud: either area, but in Johar Town insist on an LDA record check before paying any token.
