To read a Lahore society map, find the phase and block, locate the plot number on its street, check road widths and what sits next to the plot (parks, commercial, mosque, graveyard), then confirm the same plot appears on the approved layout plan held by the LDA or DHA.

Key takeaways

  • A brochure map is marketing. The approved layout plan is what the authority signed off, and it is the one to match.
  • Punjab's 2026 rule amendments set open spaces at 5–7% of most schemes, graveyards at least 2% and commercial at 5–10%.
  • LDA's draft regulations call for internal roads of at least 30 feet and main loop roads of 80 feet.
  • Corner plots carry a premium. DHA's rules refund the extra if a corner plot stops being a corner.
  • Count the plots on the map. A society selling more files than the plan shows is a red flag.

Quick answer

Read a society map from the outside in. Start with the scheme boundary and the roads that reach it. Then find the phase or sector, the block, the street and finally the plot number. Look at what surrounds the plot: road width, parks, commercial strips, mosques, graveyards, grid stations. Finally, ask to see the same plot on the approved layout plan, not just the sales brochure.

Approved plans are formal documents. The LDA's draft private housing scheme regulations require the layout to be signed by the owners or sponsor and a town planner, superimposed on a satellite image and geo-referenced (LDA PHS Regulations draft). A real plan can be checked against the ground.

Phases, blocks and plot numbers

Big societies are split in layers. Names vary, but the hierarchy is similar.

Level What it means Example from DHA Lahore
Phase A separately planned and released area Phase 6, Phase 9 Prism
Sector / block A neighbourhood inside a phase Prism IX Sectors A, J, L, M
Street Numbered or named road inside a block —
Plot number The unit you buy Shown on allotment letter

In May 2026 DHA opened possession in Prism IX by sector: Sector A first, then J, L and M. Sector J alone held 275 ten-marla and 2,472 five-marla plots (DHA Lahore). Knowing your sector tells you whether your plot is in possession.

Reading plot sizes off the map

Maps often colour-code sizes. Check them against the society's standard dimensions. DHA's are 25 × 45 ft for 5 marla, 35 × 64 or 35 × 65 ft for 10 marla and 50 × 90 ft for 1 kanal (DHA regulations). The LDA draft says residential front-to-depth ratios should be 1:1.5 to 1:2.5, with up to 10% odd-sized plots allowed (LDA PHS draft). A plot that is far wider or narrower than its neighbours is probably one of the odd ones. Ask why.

Road widths and commercial zones

Road width affects traffic, parking and what can be built next to you.

Feature Standard Source
Internal road (minimum, in revisions) 30 ft LDA PHS draft
Main loop road serving public buildings 80 ft minimum LDA PHS draft
Road to public building site up to 1 kanal 30 ft; larger sites 40 ft LDA PHS draft
Road to graveyard under 20 kanal 30 ft; 20 kanal and above 40 ft LDA PHS draft
Height rules change at 25 ft and 60 ft right-of-way LDA building regulations

Sources: LDA PHS draft; LDA building regulations.

The LDA building regulations treat plots on roads of 60 ft and above differently for some requirements, and CNG and petrol stations need at least 80 ft of right-of-way (LDA building regulations). A wide road outside your house can mean commercial activity nearby later.

Commercial areas

Punjab's 2026 amendments cap commercial area at 5–10% of a scheme (ProPakistani, 23 Jun 2026). On the map, commercial strips usually run along main boulevards or cluster at block centres. Living next to one is convenient for shopping and noisy for sleeping. DHA's standard commercial plots range from 2 marla (15 × 30 ft) to 32 marla (60 × 120 ft) (DHA regulations).

Parks, mosques and corner plots

What the rules require

Land use 2026 Punjab requirement
Open spaces 5–7% of total area in most schemes; at least 10% in apartment projects
Graveyard At least 2%
Public buildings 2–3%
Commercial 5–10% cap
Utilities Underground before roads are built

Source: ProPakistani, 23 Jun 2026. If a map shows almost no green or no graveyard, the plan may not match current rules, or it may be a brochure, not the approved plan.

Park-facing and mosque-adjacent plots

Park-facing plots are popular and usually priced higher. DHA's regulations define a park but do not regulate park-facing premiums (DHA regulations), so the premium is a market price, not a rule. Mosque-adjacent plots split buyers: some value the closeness, others dislike the traffic at prayer times.

Corner plots

A corner plot faces two roads. It gets more light and often a second gate. DHA's rules let a corner 1 kanal plot have two car porches resting on the boundary wall instead of one, and require front clear space on both sides if the owner puts the frontage on the longer side (DHA regulations).

Most usefully: if a corner plot allotted to you ceases to be a corner, DHA's regulations require you to accept a non-corner plot and refund the extra amount. Ask any other society whether it gives the same protection, in writing.

Matching the map to a listing

This is the step that saves money. Before paying token money:

  1. Get the plot number, block and phase in writing from the seller or agent.
  2. Find it on the approved layout plan, not only the brochure. The LDA website has approved and illegal scheme lists (LDA).
  3. Scan the LDA QR code if the society has one. It shows total plots, plots with dues and development stage (Estateland).
  4. Check the size. Measure frontage and depth on site against the map dimensions.
  5. Check surroundings. Walk the street. Is the "park" a park, or an empty plot?
  6. Check the count. If the society has sold far more files than plots on the plan, walk away. Islamabad's ICHS case reportedly involved about 42,000 files against a layout supporting around 6,000 (ProPakistani, 8 May 2026).

Red flags on a map

  • No scheme name, approval number or date.
  • Plots drawn over a drain, high-tension line or public road.
  • A commercial strip that appears only on the newest brochure.
  • Blocks marked "future" or "proposed" being sold now.

Bottom line

A map tells you what the society promises. The approved layout plan tells you what the authority accepted. Your plot needs to be on the second, at the size and position you are paying for.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a master plan and a layout plan?

People use the terms loosely. What matters is the approved layout plan, signed and submitted to the authority, which shows every plot, road and open space.

How much open space should a Lahore society have?

Under Punjab's 2026 amendments to the Private Housing Schemes Rules, open spaces should be 5–7% of total area in most schemes and at least 10% in apartment projects.

Are corner plots worth the extra price?

They give more light, two frontages and, in DHA 1 kanal plots, room for a second porch. They also lose privacy and garden space to two roads. Get the corner premium refund terms in writing.

How can I check if a plot is on the approved map?

Ask the society office for the approved layout plan and compare the plot number and size. For LDA-approved schemes, check the LDA website lists and the society's QR code.
