A good kitchen design in Pakistan starts with the fuel and ventilation plan, because new gas connections were halted again in April 2026, then fits an L, U, galley or island layout to the plot, and sets the finish level against Lahore finishing rates of roughly Rs2,000 to Rs9,450 per sq ft across tiers.

Kitchen design in Pakistan has changed because the fuel question has changed. New domestic gas connections were halted again in April 2026, and an RLNG connection's demand-notice fee rose to about Rs23,500 from about Rs6,500 (Aaj News). So the first design decision is how you will cook, and only then which layout and cabinets.

This guide covers layouts by plot size, fuel and ventilation, materials and budget, and the mistakes that cost Lahore families most.

Start with the size you actually have

Most Lahore societies use the 225 sq ft marla, so a 5-marla plot is 1,125 sq ft and a 1-kanal plot is 4,500 sq ft (Avenir Developments). The kitchen competes with stairs, a lounge and bedrooms for that space.

No Lahore rule sets a minimum kitchen size. DHA's regulations set a minimum of 100 sq ft and 9 ft width for a living room, and require that all rooms be well lit and ventilated (cl. 29(a)) (DHA Lahore). DHA also wants the kitchen grease-trap location shown on drawings (cl. 15(k)). LDA requires a minimum clear storey height of 9 ft 6 in (LDA).

Plot Typical kitchen approach Layout that usually fits
3–5 marla One compact kitchen per floor or one shared Galley or L-shape
7–10 marla Main kitchen plus a small pantry or utility L-shape or U-shape
1 kanal Show kitchen open to the lounge, plus a working kitchen behind U-shape or island, plus separate back kitchen
Upper portion Self-contained kitchen for the upper unit L-shape or galley

Kitchen layouts compared

Layout Works best in Strength Weakness
Galley (two parallel counters) Narrow 5-marla plans Efficient walking distance Feels tight with two cooks
L-shape Corner kitchens, 5–10 marla Open side for a small table Corner cabinets waste space without fittings
U-shape 10 marla and up Most counter and storage Can feel enclosed without a window
Island 1 kanal, open plans Social, extra prep space Needs clearance on all sides
Open kitchen to lounge Modern 10 marla and 1 kanal Light and space Desi cooking smells and smoke travel

What we'd do: in a 5-marla house, choose an L-shape on an outside wall with a window. Openable glass and a ducted hood beat any cabinet upgrade.

The two-kitchen pattern

Many larger Lahore homes pair a clean show kitchen with a separate working kitchen for tarka, frying and roti. If you plan an open kitchen, the second kitchen is what keeps the lounge from smelling of oil. In a 10-marla plan, even a small utility room with a hob and exhaust can do this job.

Fuel in 2026: gas, LPG or electric

Gas used to be the default. That is no longer safe to assume in a new house.

Fuel Status in 2026 Design implication
Piped natural gas New connections halted again, April 2026 (Aaj News) Plan pipe routes only if a meter exists
RLNG connection Demand-notice fee about Rs23,500; urgent fee Rs25,000 Bills can be much higher than conventional gas
LPG cylinder Widely used Needs a ventilated, outside cylinder spot
Induction / infrared Stoves roughly Rs4,000 to Rs15,000+ in Lahore stores (Dawn) Dedicated power points; suitable cookware

Dawn reported in April 2026 that only about 38.6% of Pakistani households use piped gas and 5.7% use LPG as their main cooking fuel, citing a World Bank survey (Dawn). It identified middle- and upper-income urban households with rooftop solar as the most likely early adopters of electric cooking.

That shift is already visible in Lahore. Lok Sujag reported in December 2024 that gas shortages and low pressure were pushing Lahore households towards electric stoves, and that one family's bill rose by about Rs1,200 a month after switching (Lok Sujag). A household with a 5 kW solar system ran its stove mainly in daytime.

Design for both

Run a gas line and a dedicated induction circuit at the hob position. It costs little at the wiring stage and lets you switch fuels as prices change.

Ventilation and safety

A Pakistani kitchen produces heavy smoke and steam. Ventilation is the feature you notice most after a year.

  1. Put the hob on an outside wall so the hood can duct straight out.
  2. Use a ducted hood, not a recirculating one, for desi cooking.
  3. Add an openable window, ideally opposite or beside the hob for cross-draught.
  4. Keep the gas meter, regulator and any LPG cylinder outside or in a ventilated recess.
  5. Leave the main valve accessible so it can be shut at night.
  6. Install a smoke or gas alarm near, not above, the hob.

Gas safety advice from SNGPL: check leaks with soapy water instead of matches, use certified plumbers, avoid rubber pipes on heaters, and shut the main valve before sleeping (APP). If you smell gas, do not touch switches or run fans or exhausts; open doors and windows and call 1199.

Rescue 1122 adds that old or damaged pipes are "hidden hazards" and that pressure boosters and illegal compressors should be avoided (APP).

During winter smog, Punjab EPA advises keeping windows and doors closed at peak times (EPA Punjab). That makes a ducted hood even more important from November to January.

Materials and finish levels

Kitchen cost is mostly a finishing decision. Two 2026 sources set Lahore finishing rates by tier.

Tier Finishing rate per sq ft (covered area) What it typically includes
Economy about Rs2,000 Local ceramic tiles, China ply doors, local sanitary
Standard about Rs3,200–4,200 Branded local tiles, Malaysian ply doors
Premium about Rs5,000 Imported tiles, ash wood doors
Luxury about Rs8,000–9,450 Designer kitchen with imported appliances, marble stairs

Sources: Toolsfluent, Jul 2026 (Rs2,000 / 3,200 / 5,000 / 8,000) and Avenir Developments, Sep 2026 (Standard Rs4,200; Luxury Rs9,450).

Neither source prices kitchen cabinets or countertops separately. Get two or three itemised quotes listing carcass board, shutter finish, hardware and counter material.

Toolsfluent also notes that standard 60×60 cm or 30×30 cm tiles can cost 25–35% less than custom sizes with the same look. That saving applies to kitchen floors and backsplashes too.

Practical material choices

  • Carcass: moisture-resistant board near the sink; Lahore's monsoon humidity swells cheap particle board.
  • Counters: a hard stone or quartz-type surface near the hob; laminate scorches under hot karahis.
  • Backsplash: full-height tiles behind the hob for easy cleaning of tarka splatter.
  • Flooring: matt, slip-resistant tiles.
  • Lighting: under-cabinet strips over the counter, not only a ceiling light.

Heat and light

A west-facing kitchen in a Lahore summer is an oven. Architects studied in a 2020 UET Taxila paper used sun shades, cross-ventilation via the stack effect, courtyards and roof insulation to keep Lahore houses cooler (UET Taxila).

For a top-floor kitchen, the roof matters. A UN-Habitat roof study found the better roof treatments lowered indoor temperatures by about 4°C on average (UN-Habitat).

Common mistakes

  • Designing an open kitchen with no second kitchen and no ducted hood.
  • Assuming gas will arrive in a new house without a meter.
  • No dedicated power circuit for induction, oven, microwave and fridge.
  • Hob under a window, where wind blows out flames and curtains catch.
  • Cylinder inside a closed cabinet.
  • Cheap carcass board near the sink, which swells in the first monsoon.
  • Too few power points on the counter.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is the best kitchen design for a 5 marla house in Pakistan?

An L-shape or galley on an outside wall with a window and ducted hood. It gives enough counter space while keeping the lounge and stairs workable.

Should I choose an open kitchen in Pakistan?

Only if you can add a ducted hood and ideally a small working kitchen for heavy frying. Smoke and smell from desi cooking otherwise reach the whole lounge.

Is induction better than gas for Pakistani homes?

It depends on supply and bills. New gas connections were halted again in April 2026, and induction stoves cost roughly Rs4,000 to over Rs15,000 in Lahore stores. With rooftop solar, daytime electric cooking makes more sense.

How much does a kitchen cost in Lahore?

Separate kitchen prices were not available from our sources. Lahore finishing rates run from about Rs2,000 per sq ft at economy level to about Rs9,450 at luxury level, so get itemised cabinet and counter quotes.

How do I ventilate a kitchen properly?

Put the hob on an outside wall, duct the hood outside, add an openable window and keep the gas meter and cylinder in a ventilated spot. Never run fans during a gas leak.

What size should a kitchen be?

Lahore rules do not set a minimum kitchen size. DHA's 100 sq ft minimum for a living room is a sensible floor for a main family kitchen in a 10-marla or larger house. This guide is general information; confirm current rates with FBR/the bank/a lawyer before you pay.
